We used structural equation modeling to test the sequence outlined above and to examine the effect of infant iron status on children&#8217;s verbal performance at ages 5 and 10 years including the roles of child and parent intermediate variables.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RESULTS<\/strong>: Severity of iron deficiency in infancy was associated with higher levels of children&#8217;s dull affect and social reticence at 5 years (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009.10, B\u2009=\u2009.26, SE\u2009=\u2009.12, p\u2009&lt;\u2009.05), and these behaviors were associated with parent unresponsiveness (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009.29, B\u2009=\u2009.13, SE\u2009=\u2009.03, p\u2009&lt;\u2009.001), which related to children&#8217;s lower verbal abilities at age 5 (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009- .29, B\u2009=\u2009- 2.33, SE\u2009=\u2009.47, p\u2009&lt;\u2009.001) and age 10 (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009- .22, B\u2009=\u2009- 3.04, SE\u2009=\u2009.75, p\u2009&lt;\u2009.001).
